The city of Vernon is found in the south-central region of BC. The city got its name from the former BC MLA, Forbes George Vernon. He helped establish the famed Coldstream Ranch. On December 30, year 1892, Vernon city was incorporated. Within the area referred to as Greater Vernon, or the metropolitan region, the population is 55,418, whilst Vernon city has a population of 35,944. Individuals who reside here are referred to as "Vernonites."
The city of Vernon is well-known for its beaches and its lakes in the summer and its hockey and its skiing in the winter. It is considered a year-round tourist spot. Lots of individuals from Calgary and Vancouver rely on it as a weekend get-away. One of the main summer events which the city of Vernon hosts is a big Slo-Pitch tournament.
Predator Ridge Resort is amongst the few golf courses within the area. This resort is a 36-hole golf resort and community that is amongst just 2 public courses in Western Canada to have been ranked by Score Magazine as one of the top 25 golf courses within the last 8 years. Predator Ridge has proudly hosted the Skins Game twice. The first time was in the year 2000 and featured Sergio Garcia, Fred Couples, Mike Weir and Phil Mickelson. During 2008, the course held the event once more and Camilo Villegas, Colin Montgomerie, Mike Weir, Greg Norman and Fred Couples graced the course. A new Fred Couples Signature course is currently open. It is called "The Rise" and it showcases unsurpassed views of Vernon itself together with views of the Okanagan Lake.
Skiing is amongst the most well-known winter sports in the city of Vernon. There are two major ski locations there. They are Silverstar Mountain Resort and Sovereign Lake Nordic Club. Silver Star is known as among the top ski resorts within North America. It has a huge cross-country skiing area which hosted a 1991 FIS Cross-Country World Cup event. Sovereign Lake is known for more than 50 km of skiing terrain. It is considered a premier cross-country skiing site. As the host of a 2005 FIS Cross-Country World Cup event, this Nordic Club gained worldwide exposure.
Curling is one more popular sport in the city of Vernon. The local Vernon Curling Club has lots of curlers participating on a regular basis. Before, the city has hosted various major national curling events comprising the 1979 Canadian Senior Women's Curling Championship and the 1992 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. In 2004, the Canadian Senior Curling Championships was also held. In the year 2008, the first worldwide event was the Ford Women's Curling Championship that was held at the Vernon Multiplex.
Tennis is another popular sport in the city of Vernon. The city is home to various picturesque courts with remarkable views. In the month of October 2008, the Vernon Tennis Association was started. Its objective was to bring together all tennis players of different skill levels in the Vernon area in order to offer both social and competitive programs which were not being currently offered to player. Presently, the VTA operates classes fifteen hours each week in collaboration with Greater Vernon Parks, Recreation and Culture.
Among the most popular locations in Vernon is Kalamalka Beach. It has a large pier that was constructed by a local service club for the purpose of jumping, diving and sunbathing. Beach volleyball is particularly common in the evenings. Kin Beach and Paddle Wheel Park located on Okanagan Lake are among the most well-known of the twenty or so bigger beaches located within the area. It is possible to find your own private beach real estate or haven if you feel the bigger beaches are too crowded. There are different pieces of beach real estate available.
